Quay House: Bespoke new-build house

With their wealth of experience and reputation for creating outstanding properties, the award-winning Martin Sewell Building Company was the obvious choice when it came to building a stunning contemporary home on the shores of Chichester Harbour at Emsworth.

“We relished the opportunity to build such a prestigious house in a wonderful prominent location in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are delighted with the result,” says Martin.

In 2011, MSBC was approached by Helyer Davies Architects and Robert Barnes Architects, asking them to be partners in this complex building project – on a site of archaeological interest. Complying with planning conditions to protect nesting birds, the existing property was demolished and, in January 2012, work began on constructing the new cutting-edge home, using off-site manufactured structural insulated panels.

The design of this unique cedar-clad property included an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, bespoke oak hanging staircase, and a raft of environmentally friendly features such as a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system, solar hot water and photovoltaic systems.

Martin says: “The team was in its element, bringing to life the innovative, inspiring designs the client had dreamed of. The open glazed corner with no supporting post, seen in the photograph, is fully exposed to the southwest prevailing winds when the doors are open. The views of the harbour are breathtaking.”
