The Old Forge
The Old Forge: Restoration & conversion
The Forge in Patching dates back to the 15th Century and is a Grade II listed building. The Blacksmith’s Shop has been passed down through the generations with client Neil Crossley’s great-great-great-grandfather being the oldest known ancestor. As such, the project was especially personal.
Two key considerations guided discussions between clients, architect, local council and MSBC whilst working on the project – these were: How best to provide a warm and homely living space and how best to preserve the character of the building.
In order to achieve a balance between the two, a philosophy of adaptation was chosen rather than re-modelling.
One example of realising this adaptive approach would be to stick as faithfully as possible to the existing openings both externally and internally. A single new roof light provides natural light to the bathroom, but for the most part, the form and general external appearance remains unchanged.
Original materials were re-used and restored wherever possible.
“Despite the dreadful extreme winter weather conditions, Bill (Foreman) and Leon even turned up in the snow. Your team were always reliable and punctual and villagers and neighbours commented on how courteous Bill and his team were, especially when they forewarned them if any big delivery lorries were arriving, apologising if they had to wait. The weekly meetings with Ron and Bill were extremely beneficial, the minutes of the meetings were always forwarded to us to use as a reference of the progress achieved, future targets and oncoming aims.”
"All your team were well mannered, approachable and of a friendly disposition. Bill deserves recognition as he was especially patient when we constantly asked questions. He always cleaned up his and others’ tools and the general site. Workmanship was excellent and finishes to a high standard.
We just wish to express our thanks and gratitude to you for all your hard work and help in renovating our now beautiful home. We are so happy and comfortable! We would not hesitate to recommend to others the work you have all done and would be happy to show others the work your team have produced as we are so proud to live here.”
