Heritage Restoration
The Martin Sewell Building Company has begun the first phase of restoration and enabling works to a collection of dilapidated Georgian stable blocks, nestled within the grounds of a large listed estate. Once integral to the estate’s daily life, these historic buildings had fallen into disrepair and are now being carefully prepared for a new chapter.
Led by Project Manager Owen, and working in collaboration with Gadsden Gardens, the first phase focuses on essential infrastructure — including the installation of a completely new drainage system and extensive service and landscaping works. A particularly delicate element involves the hand-lifting and preservation of the original brick-paved courtyard, laid centuries ago directly onto compacted earth, which will be reinstated as part of the wider scheme.
Every stage of the process is guided by a heritage-led approach, ensuring that traditional craftsmanship and original materials are respected and retained wherever possible. The works not only stabilise and protect the site but also lay the groundwork for a full future conversion, allowing these once-forgotten buildings to once again play a meaningful role within the estate.
Through considered planning, skilled intervention, and a deep respect for the site’s history, MSBC is helping to preserve an important piece of Georgian architecture — ensuring these stable blocks endure as both a functional space and a lasting reflection of the estate’s heritage.
