Blakes Cottage: Preserving a literary landmark

The Martin Sewell Building Company is serving as main contractor for the restoration of Blake Cottage in Felpham, one of William Blake’s most treasured homes. The celebrated poet and artist famously described this historic property as having a “roof of rusted gold,” and now MSBC is entrusted with preserving this nationally significant cultural landmark.

This historic restoration project forms part of the Blake Cottage Trust’s mission to preserve the property and transform it into a cultural and educational centre ahead of the 200th anniversary of Blake’s passing in 2027. The work requires the careful repair and conservation of the listed cottage whilst maintaining the highest standards of traditional craftsmanship.

The restoration of the historic roof represents a particularly significant element of the project, preserving the building’s character whilst ensuring structural integrity for future generations. As main contractor, MSBC is coordinating all works to ensure that every aspect of the restoration meets the exacting standards required for such an important heritage building.

The project supports the long-term vision of adapting the cottage for public use as a centre for learning and celebration of Blake’s legacy. This transformation will create a lasting educational and cultural resource that honors the poet’s connection to this special place.

The restoration preserves the building’s structural integrity while respecting its historic fabric, ensuring that Blake Cottage can continue to inspire visitors and scholars for generations to come. The work aligns with the wider goal of celebrating William Blake’s life and influence in time for the significant milestone of 2027, creating a fitting tribute to one of England’s most visionary artists and poets.
